Visiting Pilots

The Wings of Rogallo welcomes Visiting Pilots to fly our 3 sites.  Each site has it’s own requirements, outlined below.  Please feel free to email one of the site committee members or the Flight Director for additional information.

Visiting pilots must be members of USHPA, and are limited to 2 days per calendar year.  If you intend to fly our sites more than 2 days, we ask that you join our club for $30 annual fee.

Foreign Pilots

If you’re a foreign pilot, you’ll need to have a 30-day temporary USHPA membership available from an instructor, tandem pilot, or club officer for a nominal fee.  In addition, it’s generally advisable to have an IPPI card to assess your ratings.

Process:

Register on our site as a visiting pilot (free).
Complete online waivers.
Read the site-specific information below and get a site intro.

Register as a Visiting Pilot

Mission Ridge

You must be an advanced rated pilot (IPPI 4 or 5).
You must be a USHPA member.
You must register with the Wings of Rogallo website.  Once you register, you’ll be able to download your Membership Card with your visiting pilot sticker.

Note: Foreign Pilots should register as a non-USHPA pilot.  Only after getting your 30-day temporary membership will you be able to fly Mission Peak.

All pilots must contact a member of the site introduction team to be given a site introduction.  Site introductions are required for all visiting pilots:

Mt. Diablo

Mt. Diablo requires a waiver and a site introduction:

Ed Levin

Ed Levin is probably the most heavily regulated site in the Bay Area, and it takes weeks to get the necessary steps completed before flying at Ed Levin.  It’s possible to fly Ed Levin as a visitor, but not frequently done because of the requirements.
If you’re still interested, here’s what you need to do:
  • First, Join the Wings of Rogallo club:
    • As a Full Member if you’ll be flying more than 2 days, it’s $30 per year
  • Second, fill out this waiver: Ed Levin Waiver
  • Mail it to:
    Wings of Rogallo
    PO Box 361885
    Milpitas, CA 95036 -1885
Make sure it’s legible, and use blue or black ink when you fill out the waiver.
Then you’ll need to wait until it’s processed, usually a week or two.  You should receive a membership card and a helmet sticker in the mail.  Feel free to check with me a couple of weeks after you’ve sent it to see if it’s been processed.
Once you’re in the membership database for Wings of Rogallo and your waiver has been received, then it’s pretty quick:
Fill out this waiver AFTER you’re in the Wings of Rogallo database.  Enter “Wings of Rogallo” as the “name of instructor or organization” on page 3.
SCCPD Ed Levin Waiver and mail it to:
SCC Park Permits
Santa Clara County Parks
298 Garden Hill Drive
Los Gatos, CA 95032
And then connect with an instructor to get a proper site intro for the 300′ and 600′ launches (Novice rated pilots, IPPI-2) or the 1750 (Intermediate rated pilots, IPPI-3). You can not fly unless accompanied by a current WOR member.
There’s a ton of information about the requirements for each launch in the site procedures document here:
And there’s a lot of other worthwhile information linked on our site guide page too:
Sorry it’s such a pain, but it takes a lot of waivers and approvals to fly Ed Levin because of the arrangement with the park.
